  1. A compact disc is a disc for storing digital
  2. information, about 12cm (4╜inches) across, 
  3. mainly used for music, when it can have over
  4. an hour's playing time. Entirely different 
  5. from a conventional LP, the compact disc is
  6. made of aluminium with a transparent plastic
  7. coating. The metal disc underneath is etched
  8. by a laser beam with microscopic pits that
  9. carry a digital code representing the sounds.
  10. During playback, a laser beam reads the code
  11. and produces signals that are changed into 
  12. near-exact replicas of the original sounds.
  13. Compact discs were launched 1983.

  15. Over the past decade development of the
  16. compact disc has allowed home computers to
  17. use them as a storage medium.
